It was but a short trip to mystery for Jesse Rivera and his friend, Douglas Caceres. They departed Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on May 26, 1978, bound for the Bahamian island of Providenciales only 45 minutes away. They took off at 4 p.m. and listed their landing time at 4.45 p.m. Thirteen minutes after takeoff, Rivera contacted control and stated all was well. However, they never arrived.
An immediate search was instigated, led by USCGC Sherman.
Eventually “All leads Exhausted” was sent back and the case was closed.
The Beech Queen Air was maintained in excellent condition. The weather was fine. Coast Guard phone logs show that both pilots were instrument rated and that Caceres, specifically, had 8,500 flight hours, some in C-46s and DC-3s.
