Sacramento was in a panic. Thanks to a $30,000 reward vigilante groups took advantage of the Citizen Band Radio craze and cruised the streets in cars looking for the sadistic house wrecker. The police insisted they not travel in groups in order to prevent any lynch mob from forming. EAR disappeared. He did not strike once in the Summer of 1977. His crime spree had come to a crescendo in May with 5 strikes in that month alone. Now he seemed dormant. Was there too much danger now? Too much publicity?   . . .But he was not dormant. He was stalking elsewhere. Come September 6, just after school resumed, he would strike in Stockton, a town 30 minutes south of Sacramento. He hadn’t left.
